“You have cancer” are dreaded words that no one ever wants to hear. They can bring a flood of emotions, questions, and uncertainty.
Dr. Richard Holdeman knows this all too well. He has a personal journey of “Living With Cancer” after his Leukemia diagnosis. He will share insights on managing life with this difficult diagnosis. He gives practical advice on finding hope and strength through the ups and downs of cancer. This luncheon is for those facing a health crisis of their own or providing support for others and wanting to learn more. It is an opportunity for reflection and encouragement in a supportive community.
Rich is both a pastor and educator. He is pastor at Bloomington Reformed Presbyterian Church and a senior lecturer in biology at IU. He blends his science and faith background to bring a unique perspective. Outside of his work, he’s passionate about sports. He coached the Indiana University Ice Hockey Club for over a decade. He believes his strongest asset is his wife Amy. He is a devoted husband and father of four.

Angel and Joseph know a lot about wrestling!
Angel Escobedo is one of the most successful wrestlers in Indiana University history. His is a NCAA Division 1 National Champion and four time All-American. After an international career and 3 years coaching at Iowa State he became the Hoosiers’ head coach in 2018. Under his leadership and coaching, Indiana wrestlers have excelled in NCAA competition, with a focus on building program momentum and fostering a thriving wrestling community in Indiana. Angel and his wife, Pauli, have three children – Malachi, Saniyah and Zoe.
Joe Stanton is a UNC Greenville wrestling standout and Hall of Fame member. He held the school’s wins record of 98-25 for 11 years. He excelled at 158 pounds and has multiple championship appearances and titles. Presently, he serves as Vice President of Thornburg Insurance agency, specializing in commercial insurance and risk management. Joe previously served at the Character Coach and team Chaplain under Coach Escobedo. Joe is married to Shonda, who is the Head Softball Coach at Indiana University. They have three children, Shayla, Gianna and Josiah.
Greg Stoughton is a seasoned leader, accomplished strategic thinker, respected mentor, and an inspiring speaker. He is dedicated to helping individuals unlock their full potential while discovering God’s purpose and plan for their lives. Alongside his wife, Linda, Greg passionately serve the Lord with Cru from Cincinnati. As a devoted father of two boys, he brings a wealth of life experiences to his presentations.
Greg’s journey is marked by resilience and a profound understanding that outward, physical differences don’t define a person. Dr. Charles R. Powell is an associate professor of urology at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Powell earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He then completed an internship and residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and a fellowship at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille Carver College of Medicine.

Col Jamie Crowhurst retired from the Air Force in May of 2017 after 30 years of military service. His 15 military postings included commands at the squadron and wing level; multiple Pentagon and other headquarters tours; instructor positions in four different aircraft type; and a final tour as Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché in Bulgaria. Additionally, Col Crowhurst deployed five times including two separate squadron command tours supporting combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jamie is an Air Force Academy graduate and a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Air Command and Staff College. He also holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from Webster University and served as a National Defense Fellow at the Congressional Research Service. After serving our country, he and his wife Lisa now make their home in Bloomington.

Rick Alvis
Richard (Rick) A. Alvis has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Wheeler Mission since 1990. He is a 1977 graduate of Ft. Wayne Bible College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Education and is an ordained Christian Union minister. Just prior to assuming his duties at Wheeler Mission, he served as the Executive Director of the Evansville Rescue Mission for 10 years. In 1992, he was listed in “Who’s Who Among Rising Young Americans” and is a recent recipient of the distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash award. Rick has served the Citygate Network in several capacities, including Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President. He has also been on the national Board of Directors of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. He lives in the Greenwood area with his wife, Julie, and enjoys spending time with their three adult children and their families.

James Lenhoff
James Lenhoff is a graduate of Miami University with a degree in marketing. A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, he worked in financial planning with a large national firm before helping to found Wealthquest Corporation in 2006.
James is the author of Living a Rich Life: The No-Regrets Guide to Building and Spending Wealth and he has also launched the Rich Life Podcast, which focuses on changing the conversation around money. It’s easy to view our money as if it is a math problem. But James believes the math is the easy part. He contends that it is the emotion, the relationship, and the human brokenness that we bring to money that makes it feel difficult to handle and we should be focusing on these issues if we want to make financial progress. Married and the father of three, James spends much of his free time on service projects through his church, including financial literacy education programs, and mission work in Haiti.

February 5, 2019 Raising Boys the Zeller Way Steve Zeller
During Steve’s career, he worked in a leadership role for 28 years. He has coached basketball, as well as trained their sons to elevate their games to the highest level. Today, Steve works full-time for Zeller Xperience, a nonprofit business that conducts basketball training and teaches character training. At Zeller Xperience, Steve and Lorri teach fundamentals to the athlete, while also working to instill high character, self-confidence, and life leadership skills. Their goal is to make players better at the game of basketball – but also to make them better people off the court. Together, Steve and Lorri have also written a parenting book, titled Raising Boys the Zeller Way. The book is full of lessons about raising their three boys. Luke, Tyler, and Cody each finished at the top of their high school class, won Indiana’s famed Mr. Basketball award, went on to play basketball at Division I universities, and play in the NBA.

Ed and Clif were on two separate journeys before they intersected within the coaching staff of Indiana Men’s Basketball program. They will share how God directed each of their individual lives and how they now work together to lead team chapel, hold each other accountable, and partner together. It is a true “Iron Sharpens Iron” story (Proverbs 27:17).
Ed Schilling, a native of Lebanon, Indiana, is in his second season at Indiana after spending the previous four years as an assistant coach at UCLA.
Clif Marshall is in his second season as the team’s Director of Athletic Performance after spending 10 years as the Performance Director at Ignition Athletics Performance Group in Cincinnati.

May 16, 2018 Q & A With IU Football Coach Tom Allen
A year ago, Coach Allen shared with us, stories about how God has guided his life and the goals he had set for the 2017 football season. This Q&A will give us an opportunity to follow up on that session. Please join us on May 16th to be inspired as you hear what Coach Allen has to say.
Tom Allen, a 26-year coaching veteran, was named IU’s 29th head football coach in December 2016. He made his coaching debut in the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl. In 2017, IU finished ninth nationally in third down defense (29.9% – best program mark since 1992; 3rd in the Big Ten), 17th in passing defense (179.7 ypg – best program mark since 1995; 4th in the Big Ten), and 26th in total defense (340.1 ypg – best program mark since 1995). A school record, 13 Hoosiers earned 2017 All-B1G honors, including six defenders, which matched 2016’s program mark. Five Indiana players participated in the NFL Combine, which Ted a school record.
Prior to becoming the head football coach at IU, Tom was IU’s associate head coach/defense. In 2016, Tom engineered one of the top defensive turnarounds in the country. IU’s defense improved in every major statistical category against a schedule featuring four top 10 opponents, a program first. He was a nominee for the 2016 Broyles Award, honoring college football’s top assistant coach. Prior to coming to IU, Tom served as defensive coordinator at the University of South Florida. Before that he served as Assistant Head Coach, Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at various NCAA schools; including posiTons in the SEC and Sun Belt Conference, we well as being a successful high school head coach in Florida and Indiana (Ben Davis High School). February 21, 2018 A Car Dealer’s Journey Down a Road Less Traveled (Cary Curry)
Cary is the fourth generation owner of Curry Auto Center here in Bloomington. They have been selling new General Motors automobiles for over 100 years. He loves, honors, and serves customers, employees and the entire community around him. He established an endowment through the Community Foundation of Bloomington. This will enable long-term support for mentoring and faith-based community programs.
To capture his story, he wrote the book An Unlikely Discipler. It is a story that includes the car business, his family roots and the intersection – and tension – of faith and work. He talks about building trust and helping young men find their purpose. This is the heart of his calling – to disciple college men. Cary will tell parts of his story and he has invited a few of the young men he has discipled to share insights as well. Flyer
October 27, 2017 Life Reflections (Tom Abernathy)
Tom was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. While playing for the Indiana University Hoosiers in the 1970s, he was a member of four Big Ten Championship teams. In 1976, he was on the IU team that won the National Championship, which remains the last college basketball team to finish a season undefeated.
After his IU days, Tom played 5 years in the NBA. Tom is the owner of Indiana Basketball Academy (IBA), in Carmel, Indiana – impacting kids since 1996. Tom and his wife of 40 years, Susie, have three sons and eight grandchildren. Their three sons all played collegiate basketball as well.

March 8th, 2017 A Passionate Perspective on Finding Purpose (Ben Lanius)
Ben Lanius has spent the last nine years growing HighPoint Global (HPG) from a one-man operation he started in his basement to one of Inc. Magazine’s Top
500 Fastest Growing Private Companies. Today, Ben and his team of more than two hundred employees work with government clients to evolve and elevate the citizen in different agencies. HighPoint was founded with the basic belief that the process and communication experience among citizens and government agencies can continually be improved to result in a superior customer experience. As CEO, Ben oversees HighPoint’s operations and corporate affairs development. Ben’s accomplishments as a successful business owner and leader were solidified in 2015 when Ben was named Entrepreneur of the Year for the Ohio Valley Region. Ben is also a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group developing the new Project Management Standard within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

November 30th, 2016 When Open Doors Surprise You (John Laskowski)
John “Laz” Laskowski won basketball letters for the Hoosiers in 1973, 1974 and 1975. Nicknamed “Super Sub,” he averaged 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 84 career games. Laz helped the Hoosiers win three straight Big Ten Titles and advance to the Final Four in 1973, win the Collegiate Commissioners Association Title in 1974, and post an undefeated regular season before finishing with a 31-1 record in 1975. With the Hoosiers firmly entrenched as the No. 1 team in the country, he became the first IU basketball player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 3, 1975. Laskowski was then drafted by the Chicago Bulls and played two seasons, averaging 7.1 points and 2.4 rebounds. Laz was elected to Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. He has spent 33 years covering IU basketball on TV, and in October of 2016 was elected to the IU Athletics Hall of Fame. Flyer.
May 18th, 2016: Too Good Not to Be True – Steve Moore (Steve Moore)
Steve Moore has had an interesting life. He’s been a gofer, a policy director and a speechwriter on Capitol Hill. He’s traveled the world making friends and praying with leaders. He’s enjoyed great successes and defeats. These days he grieves deeply over the death of his wife of 37 years. And through it all, it’s been one long, fascinating adventure of following Jesus. He sends out a daily first-thing-in-the-morning email “Scripture of the Day” read by little pockets of believers all over (including Bloomington!). He believes “the world is not made of atoms, but of stories.” We look forward to hearing his stories of laughter, struggle, joy, pain and hope, because of what he’s seen Jesus doing in his own life all over the world. February 4th, 2016: Weathering Life’s Storms with Chuck Lofton
Chuck Lofton is a Broadcast Meteorologist at WTHR (wthr.com) in Indianapolis, IN. Known for his upbeat and friendly style, Chuck keeps viewers informed with up-to-the-minute SkyTrak weather on Sunrise from 4:30am to 7am and throughout the morning on NBC’s Today Show. In 2007, Chuck was named National Broadcaster of the Year by the National Weather Association, the greatest honor of his professional career. A frequent speaker to churches, schools and civic organizations, Chuck has been named Prodigy of Indianapolis for community service. He currently serves on the Board Of Directors for Kingsway Christian School in Avon. Chuck graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and in 2010 was named an honorary alum of Taylor University. He grew up in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. He and his wife Mary Lou have three sons, Timothy, Paul and Phillip and daughter-in-law Heidi. Flyer.

Morris Michalski (aka “Coach Mo”) is a Basketball Specialist with Athletes in Action (athletesinaction.org), an international outreach with a storied history of impacting lives through the platform of sports. Coach Mo landed with Athletes in Action (AIA) full-time in 2004 after more than 15 good years of ‘partnerships’ with AIA and more than 25 win-soaked years of coaching, mostly at the collegiate and international level. Multiple professionals at every level have trained with Coach Mo, including those currently in the NBA.
Coach Mo currently serves as chaplain/life coach to USA Basketball’s Senior National Team, the team that currently represents our country in the Olympics and the FIBA World Cup. His chief passions include helping others to skillfully negotiate life and move forward in faith and confidence, coaching, writing often, tackling about anything competitive, family fun, dating his wife, and making others smile. May 20, 2015: Doug Sherman, Business and Ministry Builder
We welcome Doug Sherman to our May 20th Men’s Life Luncheon. Doug graduated from the Air Force Academy and served in the Air Force as a fighter pilot trainer. He then earned a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Seminary.
Over the years Doug has deployed his leadership and visionary gifts to found Career Impact Ministries, and then in the workplace he was Founder and CEO of DSG Consulting, and later went on to build two real estate development firms — Aspen Heights Student Housing LLC and Innovative Real Estate Companies LLC. Most recently he founded Trading Up (www.tradingup.org), a ministry committed to helping Christ-followers experience God in the active hours throughout each day.
